Benton Harbor, Michigan Lead Crisis
In August of 2021 the community of Benton Harbor, Michigan was notified of its 6th consecutive lead action level exceedance, the longest consecutive duration of elevated lead in water documented to date in the state of Michigan. The Benton Harbor Community Water Council, with the support of several environmental groups and Safe Water Engineering filed a petition with the EPA to intervene to ensure the residents of Benton Harbor have access to safe drinking water while the water system worked to resolve the lead contamination. Safe Water Engineering provided technical support throughout the following months, ultimately resulting in the removal of all lead service lines in the community in 2023. All of these resources have been written or contributed to by Safe Water Engineering.
