Filter First: Reducing Lead in Water in Schools
In October 2023, Michigan took a pioneering step by mandating that all schools and childcare facilities provide drinking water to students and staff using filter stations certified for removing lead from drinking water, making it the first state in the nation to do so. This initiative aims to ensure reliable, sustainable access to safe drinking water, minimizing lead exposure and promoting the well-being of all students and staff at all times. Safe Water Engineering has provided statewide lead data analysis to help quantify the extent of lead in school drinking water and has developed guidance to help schools proactively install filter stations in compliance with the new requirements based on hands-on experience in the Birmingham Public School District. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) has incorporated some of my work into their statewide guidance for schools. All of these resources have been written or contributed to by Safe Water Engineering.
